Nathan Gunn's Workout

For those of us wondering how baritone Nathan Gunn keeps looking so fit on stage, The Wall Street Journal today has an article describing his workout. The article is very comprehensive (Mr. Gunn & I favor the same brand of running shoes). There are more pictures of him being athletic in the on-line summary of the article. I've seen Mr. Gunn a few times at the SF Opera but never in any of the shirtless roles for which he is famous.

Call me old-fashioned, but for an opera singer to be interviewed not about his singing but about his exercise/diet routine (or about being called "Barihunk" as in the recent LA Times article), I just find it's odd.

Anyway, I saw him last weekend as Figaro at the LA Opera. While he did a good job, he didn't wow me with his singing.

Yes, it is odd that the media is interested in Mr. Gunn more for his hunkiness than for his singing. I agree that he is a fine if not exceptional singer. I like the way he moves on stage, though. By all accounts, that LA Opera Barber is a very cute production.

I was a "super seaman" in "Billy Budd" when Gunn sang it at the San Francisco Opera. Though I'm not crazy about his voice, either, he's a very good, committed actor and a completely charming person to work with on a stage. It wasn't until we got to the first piano dress rehearsal, however, that Mr. Gunn whipped off his shirt for one of the below decks scenes and there was a surprised gasp from just about everyone. He really does have a porn star torso, which in the world of opera is an extremely rare occurrence. The fact that he's also a Mormon, married and with something like five kids just adds to the perversity.

Thanks for sharing that rehearsal story! It seems like I've been exposed to a couple of shirtless baritones this year, but Mr. Gunn's physique does seem to be exceptional. I did not know he was a Mormon. How curious.

Curiouser and curiouser... doesn't his wife have a ludicrous name? Ah yes Julie Jordan Gunn... as in a gun-toting Carousel!

Thanks for my first big laugh of the day, Gavin. After a week and a half of your Winterreise Advent Calendar, I was beginning to think you were a pretty humorless guy.
